HarshLab Enables Grid Integration of IDOM’s Upgraded MARMOK-A5 at BiMEP
HarshLab has played a key role in the latest deployment of IDOM’s upgraded MARMOK-A5 wave energy converter at the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP), providing the floating electrical infrastructure that enabled the device’s connection to the BiMEP grid.
The MARMOK-A5 is a floating wave energy converter based on Oscillating Water Column (OWC) technology. Energy is generated through the interaction between the internal water column and the buoy structure, creating an alternating airflow that drives a turbine and converts wave motion into electricity.
As part of the EuropeWave programme, IDOM has introduced several important technological improvements to the device. One of the most significant enhancements is the implementation of an upgraded Wells turbine incorporating variable-pitch blades, designed to increase energy conversion efficiency and improve performance across a wider range of sea conditions.
In addition to turbine improvements, the deployment serves to validate several system-level optimizations, including:
- An enhanced mooring configuration.
- Improved umbilical cable management and routing.
- Optimized installation and deinstallation procedures.
- Increased operational efficiency and maintainability.
The recent offshore campaign demonstrated a significant reduction in installation time, confirming the effectiveness of these innovations under real operating conditions.
HarshLab as a Floating Renewable Energy Hub
This deployment further demonstrates HarshLab’s capability as a grid-connected floating offshore renewable energy hub, enabling the testing, validation and grid integration of innovative marine energy technologies.
By providing shared offshore electrical and communication infrastructure, HarshLab facilitates the rapid deployment of emerging renewable energy systems while reducing technical and operational barriers for technology developers.
The successful connection of the upgraded MARMOK-A5 through HarshLab reinforces the platform’s role as a unique offshore infrastructure supporting the advancement of wave energy and accelerating the transition towards commercially viable marine renewable energy solutions.
